MY BROTHER'S KEEPER
The Strong Little Sister's Story of Love, Loss, and Letting Go
A True Chicago Story of Love, Trauma, Survival, Mental Health & Legacy
Written by Timeka Ashanti
He survived the streets. He survived violence. He survived things that should have taken his life. But surviving and healing were two different battles.
Growing up on Chicago's East Side, Marcus and his little sister Timeka shared a childhood filled with music, dancing, laughter, family, big dreams, and unforgettable memories.
From Saturday nights at The Rink to the cars, music, and nightlife on the East Side of Chicago, their childhood was filled with moments that made growing up in Chicago unforgettable.
But behind those beautiful memories was another reality.
A reality where young boys were navigating gangs, neighborhood violence, poverty, peer pressure, and circumstances that forced them to grow up long before they were ready.
Marcus was talented, creative, intelligent, ambitious, and full of ideas. He loved music, art, business, and finding ways to create something bigger than the circumstances around him.
But life would take him through experiences that changed the course of his future.
He survived being beaten in the head with baseball bats.
He survived being struck by vehicles.
He survived being shot in the head point blank range in 2002, despite doctors warning his family that he might not live or could face devastating lifelong impairments.
He experienced incarceration, broken relationships, and repeated encounters with violence.
And although he survived those experiences physically, the emotional and psychological impact did not simply disappear.
As Marcus grew older, his family witnessed changes in his thinking, behavior, relationships, and ability to navigate everyday life.
Trauma, possible effects of repeated brain injuries, untreated emotional wounds, and mental health struggles became part of a complicated journey that affected not only Marcus but also the people who loved him.
Yet there was so much more to his life than his struggles.
He was a son.
A brother.
A father of eight.
An artist.
A dreamer.
A man who continued trying to find his way, even when life became difficult.
And through every chapter, his little sister remained one of the people who believed in him, fought for him, loved him, and sometimes had to learn that loving someone doesn't mean you can save them from everything.
MORE THAN A MEMOIR. A CONVERSATION ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH.
My Brother's Keeper explores the lasting impact of childhood trauma, community violence, repeated injuries, incarceration, family relationships, and mental health challenges.
It raises questions that too many families are forced to confront:
What happens when a child experiences trauma over and over again?
What happens when someone survives a life-threatening injury but never receives all the support they need to recover?
How can untreated trauma affect relationships, parenting, decision-making, and the next generation?
And how do you continue loving someone when the person you remember from childhood begins struggling in ways you don't fully understand?
This book isn't written to judge Marcus, excuse every decision, or reduce his life to the hardest things he experienced.
It's written to tell the whole story.
The beautiful memories.
The laughter.
The music.
The dreams.
The mistakes.
The survival.
The love.
And the painful lessons that came along the way.
On October 14, 2025, Marcus tragically lost his life in a Chicago train accident.
His sister was left with a lifetime of memories, unanswered questions, and a determination to make sure his story would mean something beyond his death.
A MESSAGE TO EVERY FAMILY
If you are struggling with trauma, addiction, emotional pain, or changes in your mental health, please don't ignore what you're experiencing.
Seek support. Talk to someone. Get evaluated when you need to. Give yourself the opportunity to heal.
And if you love someone who is struggling, remember that compassion, boundaries, professional support, and understanding can all be part of loving them.
Getting help isn't weakness. Surviving isn't the same as healing. And no one should have to carry a lifetime of trauma alone.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
I knew my brother before the trauma.
Before the streets.
Before the injuries.
Before the addiction.
Before the mental health struggles.
Before his kids and relationships
I knew the little boy who loved to dance, create, laugh, dream, and make something out of nothing.
And even when life changed him, I never forgot that little boy.
I spent years trying to understand my brother, protect him, help him, and sometimes save him from himself.
But one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn is that you can love someone with everything you have and still not have the power to heal what they've been through.
I'm writing this book because I don't want another family to wait until they're grieving to begin having conversations about trauma and mental health.
And I don't want my brother remembered only for his struggles.
I want him remembered for the life he lived, the love he gave, the dreams he carried, and the lessons his journey left behind.
This is my brother's story.
And this is mine.
With love,
Timeka Ashanti 🤍
His life was more than his trauma. His story is bigger than his struggles. And his legacy will live beyond his loss.
